What Is Search Volume?
Search volume is a tool's estimate of how many times a query is searched in a given market per month, normally presented as a rounded monthly average across the past year.
Why it matters
It is the crude sizing number behind most content and link decisions: it separates topics with an audience from topics with none, and it sets rough expectations for what ranking on a query would be worth.
Example
A term shown at 1,900 monthly searches with a clear buying signal can be worth more investment than one shown at 40,000 that mostly attracts students and researchers.
Common misconception
That the figure is a measurement. Vendors model it from clickstream samples and advertising data, round it into buckets and often merge close variants, so it works as a relative comparison between queries rather than a forecast of visits.
