What Is Keyword Difficulty?

Keyword difficulty is a 0–100 score, produced by SEO tools such as Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz, estimating how hard it would be to rank on page one for a given search query.

Why it matters

It is a quick triage filter when you have hundreds of candidate queries and a fixed budget: it tells you roughly how much link and content investment a query is likely to demand before you commit to it.

Example

"Project management software" might score in the high 80s, while "project management software for landscaping crews" scores in the teens. The second is where a small site can realistically compete.

Common misconception

That the number is comparable across tools or is anything Google produces. Each vendor calculates it differently — mostly from the backlink profiles of the current top results — so a 40 in one tool is not a 40 in another, and none of them can see how good the competing content actually is.
