What Is a Guest Post?
Why it matters
It is the most common way to get published on a site you do not control: you supply the work, the publisher supplies the audience. Done well it puts your name and your content in front of readers who have never heard of you, and it is the format most link building budgets are spent on.
Example
A payroll software company writes a 1,500-word piece on paying international contractors, an HR blog publishes it under the author's byline, and the article cites the company's guide to contractor classification.
Common misconception
That a guest post is only worth what its link is worth. Google's spam policies specifically call out large-scale article campaigns published purely for links, and a post nobody reads has no other payoff. The placements worth paying for are the ones where the audience is real, which is also what makes them defensible.
