What Is Search Intent?

Search intent is the goal behind a query — learning something, reaching a specific site, comparing options, or buying — and it largely determines the kind of page a search engine will show for it.

Why it matters

Intent decides whether a page can rank at all. If the results for a query are all comparison articles, a product page will not break into them however many links it has, which makes intent the first thing to check before commissioning content or placements.

Example

The results for "best guest post services" are lists and reviews. A single vendor landing page targeting that phrase is competing in the wrong format, whatever its authority.

Common misconception

That intent is a fixed property of a phrase. It shifts with news, season and product cycles, and one query can hold mixed intent — which is why the current results page, rather than a label in a tool, is the evidence worth reading.
