What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content easy for AI systems that generate answers — assistants and AI search features — to retrieve, understand and cite. Most of its groundwork is ordinary SEO and clear writing.

Why it matters

A growing share of research now happens inside assistants that summarise sources instead of listing ten links. Being one of the sources an assistant leans on can bring qualified visitors, and being absent from those answers is invisible in ordinary rank tracking.

Example

A payroll company publishes a clearly structured page with dated figures, a named author and plain definitions, and later finds assistants quoting those figures and linking back.

Common misconception

That GEO is a lever that guarantees citations. No technique makes an AI system cite you: retrieval and generation vary by model, prompt and day, the vendors publish no ranking rules, and behaviour changes without notice. It improves your odds of being usable as a source; it does not buy placement.
