What Is an AI Overview?

An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google shows above the traditional results for some queries, written from several web pages and displayed with links to the sources it drew on.

Why it matters

When an overview appears it occupies the top of the screen, which changes how many people click anything below it. For buyers and publishers alike the question shifts from "do we rank first" to "are we one of the pages the summary is built from".

Example

A search for a definition returns a short generated paragraph with three source links beside it, and the first ordinary organic result now sits below that block.

Common misconception

That overviews appear on every query, or that they always cost you traffic. Google triggers them selectively, the trigger set keeps changing, and the effect on clicks differs by query type — measure your own pages in Search Console rather than assuming a direction.
