What Is a Link Insertion?

A link insertion — also called a niche edit or curated link — is the placement of a link into an article that already exists on a publisher's site, rather than into a new article written for the purpose.

Why it matters

The host article may already be indexed, ranking and receiving traffic, so the link starts from an established page instead of a brand-new one. It is also usually cheaper and faster than a guest post, because nobody has to write 1,500 words.

Example

A three-year-old buying guide ranking for "best commercial espresso machines" gains a sentence citing your maintenance guide, with a link, inside the existing text.

Common misconception

That an insertion inherits the host page's authority in full. What you get is a link on a page that happens to have history — the same attribute rules and the same relevance questions apply. An insertion bolted into a paragraph it has nothing to do with is worth less than a well-placed link on a newer page, and it is more likely to be edited out later.
