What Is Outreach?

Outreach is the process of contacting publishers, editors or site owners — usually by email — to pitch a guest post, suggest a resource, or ask for a link.

Why it matters

It is how links get earned rather than bought, and it is the only route to publishers who do not sell placements at all. It is also where relationships come from: an editor who publishes you once is far easier to reach the second time.

Example

A short email to the editor of a trade publication referencing a specific recent article, proposing two headline ideas that extend it, with links to two comparable pieces the sender has published.

Common misconception

That volume compensates for quality. Templated mass sending gets response rates near zero, burns the domain's sending reputation, and can get your mail marked as spam for every future campaign. Ten researched emails routinely outperform a thousand generic ones.
